The Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP) has intervened in the controversy surrounding allegations of domestic violence against We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Member of Parliament, Deon Lacruz. The ALP is demanding his immediate removal from public duties pending the outcome of a state investigation. This political fallout follows an official report from the Guyana Police Force, which detailed an active investigation into the opposition lawmaker.
In an interview with HGP Nightly News, ALP Leader Simona Broomes stated that domestic disputes should not be treated as confidential family matters, but rather as serious breaches of public trust. She emphasized that allegations of domestic violence are grave public concerns that can endanger lives and undermine the safety and dignity of women and children. Broomes expressed that it is unacceptable for any parliamentarian or public figure to be accused of such behavior, noting that this issue occurs too frequently.
Broomes highlighted the need for public officials to adhere to a higher standard of personal conduct, especially given the systemic pattern in Guyana where influential men are often shielded from prosecution when facing abuse allegations. She called for an end to this practice.
While the ALP supports a thorough investigation by law enforcement, Broomes acknowledged the principle of innocence until proven guilty. However, she stressed that institutional integrity must take precedence during the investigation. She formally requested that the WIN party leadership require MP Lacruz to step aside from all parliamentary duties while the legal process is ongoing.
In response to the public pressure, the WIN party issued a statement balancing due process with a firm stance against domestic abuse. They reaffirmed their belief that there is no justification for violence against women or children and emphasized the heightened responsibility that comes with public office. The party acknowledged the active investigation and the need for facts to be verified through legal channels.
The WIN party clarified its core values, stating that violence has no place in homes, communities, or politics. They committed to taking appropriate action if the allegations are substantiated, reinforcing their zero-tolerance policy for domestic violence and other forms of abuse. As of now, MP Lacruz has not released a personal statement regarding the ongoing investigation by the Guyana Police Force.
