The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) has made an appeal to the government for urgent repairs to interior access roads in mining areas that have been significantly damaged by heavy rainfall. GGDMA Managing Director Avalon Jagnandan emphasized the need for the relevant ministries and authorities to act quickly to restore the road infrastructure, which is crucial for miners to access their work sites.
In response, Minister Vickram Bharrat acknowledged the seriousness of the situation in the mining districts, noting that the poor road conditions are adversely affecting miners and their production, particularly at a time when gold prices are high. As of Friday, gold was priced at U$4,164.55 per ounce on the London Fix.
When asked whether the authorities were contacted prior to the public appeal, Jagnandan stated that the ongoing severe weather and its detrimental impact on mining infrastructure are current issues that are being addressed. Although there is no immediate statistical projection regarding the impact of the weather on gold production, Jagnandan indicated that continued poor weather and unaddressed road conditions would likely hinder production capabilities.
He explained that miners are struggling to access their work grounds and obtain essential supplies, which could impede their operations. The GGDMA also reported that the heavy rains have forced several operators to close their camps due to flooding, rendering the areas unworkable.
The association highlighted the critical situation along the Puruni River, where flooding has made the natural river channel indistinguishable from surrounding lands. This has led to the suspension of pontoon crossings, further restricting access and disrupting mining activities.
Miners working under these wet conditions are advised to exercise caution due to unstable ground. Recent weeks have seen several mining pits collapse, resulting in injuries and fatalities among miners, as well as damage to equipment. The GGDMA has reminded miners to adhere to safety protocols and follow guidance from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission. They also encouraged miners to continue selling their gold to the Guyana Gold Board or licensed buyers and to maintain accurate records.
Additionally, the GGDMA expressed concern over an increase in criminal activity in certain hinterland areas, which has affected the morale of miners. Reports of miners being beaten and robbed in mining districts have emerged in recent months.
