Guyana has lent Suriname two high-capacity drainage pumps to assist with the severe flooding that has resulted from persistent rainfall. This support was confirmed by top officials on Tuesday.
President Irfaan Ali stated that the flooding situation in Suriname was more severe than in Guyana, as the rainfall there continued with greater intensity. He noted that Suriname requested assistance with pumping capacity, leading to the decision to loan them two pumps.
Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha explained that this assistance followed a recent virtual meeting between President Ali and Suriname’s President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, who was accompanied by her country’s Minister of Public Works, Stephen Tsang. During the meeting, the flooding situation was discussed, and it was reported that Suriname was in a serious state. Consequently, a follow-up meeting was held, resulting in the decision to send the pumps.
Each pump has a capacity of 31,000 gallons per minute. The pumps were transported across the Corentyne River on Monday. The Suriname government announced that these pumps would aid in the faster and more effective drainage of excess rainwater and surface water in vulnerable areas.
The first pump is scheduled to be installed at the Sabakoe Project on Wednesday, while the second pump will be placed along the Indira Gandhiweg, near the Red Apple department store, to support the water drainage of the Rahemal Project and surrounding areas.
The Suriname government expressed its commitment to implementing structural measures to limit flooding and appreciated the cooperation and understanding of the community.
