The Ministry of Housing and Water in Guyana has taken steps to engage international law enforcement agencies, including INTERPOL, the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and CARICOM IMPACS, in the search for contractor Omar Malik. This action follows public questioning from Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed regarding the government’s management of the stalled Young Professional Homes project.
Opposition Leader Mohamed has criticized the administration’s oversight of the national housing initiative, emphasizing the need for urgent intervention on behalf of numerous families who have reportedly been defrauded. Many of these individuals are young professionals who invested their life savings into mortgage arrangements facilitated through local banks, only to find themselves facing abandoned foundations and unfinished structures.
In response to the criticism, the Ministry of Housing and Water issued a statement clarifying that Malik and his construction firm, DreamVu Homes, have been under investigation for several months. The Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) had previously issued warnings and notices, urging Malik to address issues of contractual non-compliance and unresolved financial matters.
After failing to secure cooperation from Malik, the ministry filed formal criminal fraud reports with the Guyana Police Force. The investigation intensified when it was confirmed that Malik had fled the country to avoid prosecution. Consequently, the ministry expanded its efforts to include international cooperation, sharing relevant details with global security agencies to facilitate an international review and initiate cross-border arrest protocols.
Officials from the ministry have stated that these actions were initiated prior to the recent political commentary surrounding the situation. They have also expressed their commitment to supporting the affected families while pursuing all lawful avenues to resolve the matter.
