The Government has initiated a national program for the upgradation and maintenance of public spaces ahead of Carnival 2026, employing more than 1,000 workers through regional corporations for cleanup and upkeep efforts across Trinidad. The program, which started on Monday, has started to receive positive feedback. It mainly targets areas used for Carnival celebrations, beaches, recreation grounds, and other public spaces used for community events. More than 86 teams of workers have been deployed for a month, from February 2 to February 28, with resources allocated based on area size and activity. Areas identified for focused work include beach stretches in Mayaro, Manzanilla, Guayaguayare, and the northeast coastline, along with coastal areas within San Juan Laventille and other municipalities. The regional corporations are managing the workers and have added equipment support in some areas. The Ministry is covering labor costs, reducing overtime and short term hiring expenses for corporations. The program also allows local authorities to show results and puts renewed attention on productivity within municipal corporations.
