At Gecko Gallery NYC, co-founder Joseph Megerell is dedicated to animal conservation and education. Housing over 250 reptiles, many of which are endangered, this unique facility aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving these extraordinary creatures. Megerell’s journey began with a childhood fascination for animals, inspiring him to curate ecosystems and foster a deeper understanding of reptile conservation.
Geckos, along with other reptiles, play vital roles in their habitats as both pest controllers and seed dispersers. Unfortunately, around 20 to 25% of reptiles are now facing endangerment, with many lacking safe habitats to return to. At the Gecko Gallery, the focus is on breeding and maintaining genetically stable populations of these remarkable reptiles. By doing so, they hope to not only sustain these species but also to leverage their healthy populations for future wild population rehabilitation.
The gallery serves as an educational platform, offering visitors a glimpse into the lives of various gecko species. Megerell believes that promoting appreciation for smaller animals, often overshadowed by larger wildlife such as whales and tigers, is crucial for fostering a balanced ecosystem. As urban dwellers in Brooklyn seek nature experiences, the Gecko Gallery stands as a refreshing reminder of the vital connection humans have with the animal kingdom.
