Energy Minister Dr. Roodal Moonilal has defended the government’s management of an oil spill that occurred on May 1 in the Gulf of Paria, emphasizing the rapid response measures implemented by Heritage Petroleum. Speaking at a recent press briefing, Dr. Moonilal stated that the oil leak was detected early on May 1, at 7:25 am, and the response protocols were activated without delay.
By 9:50 am the same day, chemical dispersants had been deployed approximately six to eight nautical miles from the maritime border, according to the minister. The source of the leak was secured and repaired within the same day, and operations at the facility resumed on May 2. Dr. Moonilal attributed the speed and effectiveness of the response to well-established protocols and emphasized that the environmental impact was minimal.
However, the incident has sparked controversy and political debate. Former Energy Minister Stuart Young criticized Heritage Petroleum and the current administration, accusing them of concealing the true extent of the spill. Young called for a formal investigation to determine who was responsible for suppressing information from the public.
Dr. Moonilal countered these accusations by noting that the aging infrastructure, inherited from the previous People’s National Movement administration, played a significant role in the spill. He highlighted that the spill, amounting to approximately ten barrels of oil, was swiftly contained and did not present a significant threat to the environment.
The issue has also attracted international attention, with Venezuela releasing a communique expressing concerns about possible environmental damage to its coastal areas in Sucre and Delta Amacuro. Critics have suggested that poor communication of the incident risks further straining bilateral relations between Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela.
In response to these developments, Heritage Petroleum has reaffirmed its commitment to safety and transparency, confirming that all necessary measures were taken to mitigate any potential environmental impact from the spill. The situation remains a point of contention within the political landscape, reflecting broader concerns over energy sector governance and infrastructure management.
