Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced that the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has approved Trinidad and Tobago’s proposals related to the re-appointment process of the Secretary-General. The island nation had raised objections to the process, suggesting that the issues should be referred to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) for an advisory opinion.
This proposal is in line with Article 212 of the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas, which provides a mechanism for CARICOM to refer questions surrounding the interpretation of treaty provisions to the CCJ for their input and guidance.
Trinidad and Tobago’s proposals were seen as consistent with CARICOM’s commitment to uphold the highest standards of good governance and institutional improvement. Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar has always championed these principles as necessary for the future of CARICOM.
The support for Trinidad and Tobago’s stance is seen as a testament to the chairmanship of CARICOM by the Honourable Philip J. Pierre, Prime Minister of Saint Lucia. His leadership has facilitated consensus, allowing the region to move forward in unity towards advancing the well-being of all the people of CARICOM.
