In 2025, Chinese automaker BYD took the lead in global electric vehicle (EV) sales, surpassing Tesla for the first time. BYD sold approximately 2.26 million EVs worldwide in 2025, while Tesla managed to deliver about 1.64 million vehicles. This significant shift in the EV market can be attributed to BYD’s impressive 28% year-on-year sales growth, compared to Tesla’s 8.6% decline in deliveries over the same period. Furthermore, BYD’s total global sales, including plug-in hybrid and hybrid vehicles, reached around 4.55 million units. Despite leading Tesla in the first three quarters of the year, BYD also outperformed Tesla in key markets such as Europe, Malaysia, Turkey, Singapore, Thailand, and China. This shift in global EV sales leadership was hinted at in the fourth quarter of 2023 when BYD’s quarterly pure EV sales exceeded Tesla’s.
