President Irfaan Ali recently highlighted a high-tech poultry farm established by a group of young professionals in Region Three (West Demerara-Essequibo Islands), which received government assistance. This initiative aims to empower young entrepreneurs and strengthen food security through modern agricultural practices. The young professionals collectively invested 10 percent of the project’s cost, with direct support and guidance from President Ali.
In a Facebook post, President Ali described the project as a model for innovative, efficient, and sustainable poultry farming in Guyana. The entrepreneurs began with an initial stock of 20,000 birds and are currently expanding their production capabilities. The post included testimonials from individuals involved in the project, who expressed appreciation for the encouragement and support they received.
Despite President Ali’s assertion that his own farm on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway did not receive preferential treatment, public inquiries regarding the land acquisition and infrastructure financing have emerged. Commenters on social media have called for transparency regarding the details of the farm, with some questioning the specifics of the land and resources utilized.
While some individuals praised the initiative, expressing interest in similar ventures, others raised concerns about the accessibility of information related to the President’s farm. Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has also highlighted issues related to electricity supply in nearby communities, contrasting with the developments at the poultry farm.
In a separate post, President Ali mentioned significant investments made by his government in the Waiakabra area, aimed at improving infrastructure and community facilities. The opposition has alleged that the cost of setting up the poultry farm and associated facilities is approximately GY$2.2 billion, a figure that President Ali has not confirmed. He stated that all information regarding his assets has been filed with the Integrity Commission, and he refuted claims regarding the size of his farm, stating it is less than half of what has been suggested.
