President Irfaan Ali has responded to claims regarding his farm, stating that the property has long been public information and was known to Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed. In a statement made after returning from the CARICOM Heads of Government meeting, Ali emphasized that there is nothing concealed about the farm and that all investments made in it can be accounted for. He remarked, “My farm is not a discovery. It is public information.” Ali accused Mohamed of attempting to present the issue as a significant revelation, despite already being aware of the farm’s existence.
Ali clarified that the property was developed through legitimate means, carries a substantial loan, and has been declared to the Integrity Commission during both his time in and out of government. He stated, “There is absolutely nothing to hide,” and denied receiving any special treatment, state investment, or government benefits related to the farm. He asserted, “I have not sought any special treatment, any benefit, any investment by the state,” and noted that the same conditions applicable to other leased lands along the highway also pertain to his property.
According to Ali, Mohamed exaggerated both the size and value of the farm, claiming it is not even half the size that Mohamed suggested and dismissing the reported investment value as grossly inflated. Ali expressed, “I wish if I can even get 20% of that investment for the entire farm.” He also criticized Mohamed’s credibility, referencing allegations and legal issues surrounding the Opposition Leader, including an indictment and sanctions from the United States.
Ali stated that these sanctions did not originate from him or the PPP/C Government, but from the United States. He expressed that he was being accused of manipulating matters beyond his control and mentioned that he had been targeted with blackmail. He revealed that he received a text message warning of recordings being released if he did not cease certain actions. Ali indicated that some of the recordings sent to him could have security and political implications.
Despite the controversy, Ali maintained that his conscience is clear and expressed pride in being a farmer, stating, “You could call me a farmer. It’s a title I hold with honour.” He announced plans to go live from the farm periodically so citizens can view the property and assess the allegations firsthand. Ali accused Mohamed and others of spreading mischief and deception but affirmed his commitment to continue working diligently for the citizens of the country. He urged the public to look beyond political distractions and focus on the real issues at hand.
