In a recent nationwide address, Azruddin Mohamed, the Leader of the Opposition in Guyana, called for the immediate resignation of President Irfaan Ali. This demand comes amid significant controversies that have raised public concern regarding the integrity of the current administration.
The controversies include allegations related to a $2.2 billion private highway ranch associated with President Ali and the introduction of the Former Presidents (Benefits and Other Facilities) Bill 2026. This bill aims to repeal cost-containment measures on presidential post-employment benefits that were established by the previous administration.
Senior Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh is leading the push for this bill, which seeks to restore a framework that would allow former presidents to receive uncapped, taxpayer-funded benefits. Mohamed criticized the timing of the bill, suggesting it reflects a desire for self-enrichment at the expense of the public.
He stated, “We are witnessing an unprecedented era of institutionalized greed and executive self-enrichment. At a time when ordinary Guyanese are facing daily struggles, this administration is attempting to legislate an unlimited, lifelong luxury package for its politicians.” Mohamed emphasized that the president has lost the moral authority to govern and must resign.
The proposed bill includes several benefits for former presidents, such as:
- Uncapped state-funded coverage for personal utilities.
- State-salaried household staff, including chefs and gardeners.
- Provision of state-owned vehicles with lifetime toll-free transit.
- Unlimited free medical care and coverage for dependents.
- Tax exemption status similar to that of a sitting president.
Mohamed expressed concern that these benefits would impose a financial burden on the working class while creating a class of political elites. He has mobilized a coalition of political parties, trade unions, and civil society groups to oppose the bill.
In response, President Ali has denied the corruption allegations and described the opposition’s actions as politically motivated. He maintains that his investments are transparent and legally registered. As civil society groups prepare for protests, the legislative battle over the bill is expected to be a focal point of national discourse.
