The government of Guyana has announced a partnership with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) aimed at improving primary healthcare delivery and promoting preventative health awareness. This announcement was made by President Irfaan Ali during the Jagannath Ratha Yatra 2026 celebration held at West Central Mall, Leonora.
As part of this initiative, health screening facilities will be established at ISKCON locations. The goal is to encourage both devotees and the wider community to prioritize regular health checks, adopt healthier lifestyles, and engage in preventative care. President Ali emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader governmental strategy to integrate healthcare, education, and community engagement to enhance national wellbeing.
The announcement coincided with the annual Jagannath Ratha Yatra, a significant festival in Hinduism that celebrates the ceremonial journey of Lord Jagannath along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra. This festival, also known as the Festival of Chariots, originates from Puri, India, and symbolizes divine presence, devotion, unity, service, and spiritual reflection.
During his address, President Ali highlighted the relevance of the principles represented in the Ratha Yatra, particularly in the context of contemporary societal challenges such as mental health issues and social pressures. He urged individuals to cultivate self-awareness and a sense of purpose.
President Ali acknowledged ISKCON’s contributions to Guyana, describing the organization as a positive force through its educational programs and outreach activities. He remarked that spirituality should extend beyond places of worship and be reflected in daily actions.
Additionally, he called for environmental stewardship, emphasizing the importance of protecting Guyana’s natural resources. He noted that development and conservation should progress in tandem and encouraged citizens to take responsibility for maintaining cleaner homes and communities.
Reflecting on the symbolism of the Ratha Yatra procession, President Ali stated that progress is achieved through collective effort, urging Guyanese to embody values of compassion, service, and responsibility in their everyday lives.
