The arrival of the RV Falkor II in Trinidad and Tobago marks the beginning of one of the most ambitious ocean exploration missions ever conducted in the country’s waters.
The expedition, titled “Deep Wonders of Trinidad and Tobago and the High Seas,” will bring together local scientists, engineers and students with an international team of researchers to explore some of the least understood regions of the Caribbean Sea. Using advanced remotely operated vehicles, high-resolution cameras and state-of-the-art scientific equipment, the team will investigate deep-sea ecosystems, map the ocean floor and search for marine life that has rarely, if ever, been documented.
Beyond the scientific discoveries, the mission provides a rare opportunity for Trinidad and Tobago’s next generation of researchers to gain hands-on experience with world-leading ocean exploration technology. The knowledge gathered could contribute to future research on biodiversity, climate change, marine conservation and the sustainable management of the nation’s ocean resources.
In an effort to make the expedition accessible to everyone, the Schmidt Ocean Institute will livestream the exploration on YouTube and Twitch, allowing viewers around the world to witness discoveries as they happen in real time.
For Trinidad and Tobago, the mission represents more than just a scientific expedition. It places the country at the forefront of international marine research and shines a spotlight on the vast, largely unexplored underwater world surrounding the islands, opening the door to discoveries that could have lasting scientific and environmental significance.
