50 Dead in Ethiopia Landslides, 125 Missing

In southern Ethiopia, heavy rainfall has sparked fatal landslides, resulting in the confirmed death of at least 50 individuals. An additional 125 people are reported missing. The landslides have affected several districts in the Gamo Zone, specifically Gacho Baba District, Kamba District and Bonke District. Rescue teams have successfully rescued one survivor from the aftermath of the landslides, with search efforts ongoing. Many victims were found buried beneath layers of mud, and authorities are still trying to gauge the total number of households affected by the disaster. The President of the South Ethiopia Regional State, Tilahun Kebede, has expressed his condolences and advised residents to move to safer areas due to the continuing heavy rains. The risk is particularly high in highland and flood-prone areas. Landslides and floods are common in Ethiopia during heavy rainfall seasons. A significant mudslide in southern Ethiopia in July 2024 resulted in the deaths of 229 people, marking it as one of the country’s deadliest natural disasters in recent years.
