Nicholas Francis has launched a landmark High Court lawsuit against the State and the North Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA) following the death of his wife, Alisha Kanna Seebaran. Seebaran, a 26-year-old waitress, experienced severe neurological complications after receiving the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine and passed away in May 2023.
The lawsuit alleges that Seebaran was pressured into taking the vaccine by the Government’s regulations. After receiving her first dose, she lost movement on the left side of her body within two days and was later diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a rare spinal cord disorder. Francis accuses the State and the NCRHA of negligence, claiming they failed to respond to attempts to settle the issue before legal action was taken.
The legal action also challenges the legality of Government policies during the pandemic, raising constitutional questions about informed consent and Government accountability. It argues that Seebaran took the vaccine out of fear of losing her job under the Government’s “Safe Zone” regulations, which restricted unvaccinated individuals from public spaces and workplaces.
Medical findings, allegedly made by doctors involved in Seebaran’s treatment, point to a link between the vaccine and her condition. The lawsuit also references an international medical journal documenting several neurological complications following Covid-19 vaccination in Trinidad and Tobago, including Seebaran’s case.
Francis is seeking damages and legal declarations that could set a major precedent for vaccine-related claims and Government accountability in Trinidad and Tobago. The Trinidad and Tobago Civil Advocacy Network (TTCAN) is supporting the case.
