Verkeersveiligheidsinstituut Sounds Alarm Over Persistent Road Safety Concerns
According to data from the Verkeersveiligheidsinstituut (VVI), 57 lives have been lost in traffic accidents in Suriname from January to July 2026. During the same period, 2,259 people were registered at the Emergency Department (SEH) of the Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo (AZP) after being involved in a traffic accident. This translates to an average of nearly 11 traffic victims per day.
The VVI’s figures are based on available police and SEH registrations. The institute has sounded the alarm over the persistent road safety concerns in Suriname, highlighting the need for improved safety measures to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on the country’s roads.
