**Vice President Kashim Shettima Arrives in Angola for African Union Extraordinary Summit**

*Luanda, Angola – 29 August 2026* – Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima landed in Luanda on Tuesday to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).

Upon arrival, Shettima was welcomed by senior Angolan officials and members of the Nigerian delegation already present in the capital. Among the Nigerian officials who received the vice‑president were:

– Minister of Defence Christopher Musa
– Acting Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigerian Mission in Angola, Maxy Ogbede

– Attorney‑General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi
– Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri‑Erewa

The summit, themed **“Strengthening Mechanisms for Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Africa,”** convenes African heads of state and government to assess existing continental mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution and to discuss practical measures for emerging peace and security challenges.

Key agenda items include:

– Enhancing early‑warning systems and preventive diplomacy
– Improving coordination among the AU, member states, and Regional Economic Communities
– Reinforcing the role of the AU Peace and Security Council
– Securing sustainable African financing for peace and security initiatives
– Strengthening responses to terrorism and violent extremism
– Boosting the effectiveness of the African Peace and Security Architecture and the African Governance Architecture

The summit follows the 26th Extraordinary Session of the AU Executive Council, which took place in Luanda on Saturday. That meeting brought together foreign ministers and senior officials from member states to lay the groundwork for the leaders’ deliberations.

After his arrival, Vice President Shettima received a briefing from Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu‑Ojukwu and officials of the Nigerian mission on the issues expected to dominate the summit’s discussions.

The AU Extraordinary Session is expected to conclude with recommendations aimed at strengthening Africa’s capacity for early action, preventive diplomacy, and coordinated responses to security threats across the continent.
