Victor Roberts, an alderman at the Siparia Borough Corporation, has sparked controversy by shifting his political allegiance from the United National Congress (UNC) to the People’s National Movement (PNM). His decision has resulted in calls from the UNC for his resignation, however, Roberts has firmly stated his intent to remain in office. He maintains that existing local government legislation does not grant political parties the authority to remove aldermen or councillors who change their political affiliation.
The controversy has not only fuelled tension within the UNC but has also disrupted the balance of power within the Siparia Borough Corporation. Siparia Mayor Doodnath Mayrhoo has accused Roberts of obstructing key decisions, including the approval of a cultural and entertainment programme.
Roberts, however, has defended his stance. He believes that public funds should be directed toward creating temporary employment opportunities and providing assistance to vulnerable residents within the borough.
The alderman also shed light on the origins of his discontent with the UNC. He revealed that his relationship with Kamla Persad-Bissessar soured in 2024 due to disagreements over party ethics and controversial statements made within the UNC.
