U.S. Destroys Iranian Naval Vessels Near Strait of Hormuz in Maritime Security Operation
The United States military says it destroyed multiple Iranian naval vessels near the Strait of Hormuz during a maritime security operation aimed at protecting international shipping routes.
According to the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), the action took place on March 10 and resulted in the destruction of several Iranian vessels, including 16 ships believed to be configured for laying naval mines.
U.S. officials said the operation was conducted to reduce the ability of Iranian forces to threaten commercial shipping in one of the world’s most critical waterways.
The Strait of Hormuz, which links the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is considered a strategic global chokepoint. Roughly one fifth of the world’s oil supply passes through the narrow channel every day, making it vital to global energy markets and international trade.
U.S. military officials have previously accused Iran of harassing commercial vessels and threatening freedom of navigation in the region. The latest operation, according to CENTCOM, was intended to degrade Iran’s ability to deploy naval mines or otherwise disrupt maritime traffic.
Naval mines are considered one of the most effective ways to block shipping routes in confined waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz.
There has been no immediate response from Iranian authorities regarding the reported destruction of the vessels.
Tensions between the United States and Iran have remained high in recent years, particularly around security in the Persian Gulf and the safety of international maritime traffic.
Military analysts note that any escalation in the Strait of Hormuz has the potential to affect global oil prices, shipping costs, and broader geopolitical stability.
