Two Survive Van Crash After Encountering New Landslip on Williamsville–Tabaquite

Two people narrowly escaped serious injury yesterday morning after a van overturned when it encountered a newly formed landslip along the roadway connecting Williamsville to the Torrib/Tabaquite Road.

The incident occurred on the stretch of road, which runs through a largely uninhabited area but is frequently used by motorists travelling between central and south Trinidad. According to Councillor for New Grant/Tableland, Gowrie Roopnarine, the landslip involved in the crash had developed recently.

Roopnarine said there are approximately four landslips along the route, but the section where the accident occurred was not among the older, known problem areas. He noted that bamboo had been erected at the site as a temporary warning to alert drivers to the caved-in portion of the roadway.

The councillor added that the Minister of Works and Infrastructure had visited the area about two months ago to assess the situation. Following that visit, officials from the ministry confirmed that measurements for repair works had already been completed, but funding was still being awaited to carry out the necessary repairs.

Both occupants of the van survived the accident. No further details were immediately available on their condition. Motorists are being urged to exercise caution when using the roadway, especially following recent weather conditions that may worsen existing landslips or create new ones.
