Houston has declared August 22 “Lyrikal Day,” recognising Trinidad and Tobago soca artiste Lyrikal during a ceremony that also saw two students receive scholarships in his honour.
The declaration was announced before attendees at the event, with the presenter saying, “We are declaring August 22nd, Lyrikal Day in Houston.”
Lyrikal was then presented with a certificate connected to the recognition, with a council member also participating in the presentation.
The ceremony also placed focus on community and education.
Organisers announced that two scholarship recipients had received awards in Lyrikal’s name that evening. The recipients, identified during the ceremony as Anjali Allen and Asana, were called forward to join the artiste.
“This is not just about us,” the presenter said while introducing the scholarship recipients, stressing the importance of community.
The students were then given an opportunity to share the moment with Lyrikal as part of the presentation.
The ceremony therefore marked August 22 as “Lyrikal Day” in Houston while also recognising two students with scholarships awarded in the soca artiste’s honour.
