Trinidad’s Prisons Face Crisis as Budget Constraints Bite Hard

Trinidad’s prison system is reeling from severe budget constraints that are impacting the operations and well-being of both officers and inmates. At the heart of the issue, officials from the Prison Officers’ Association are raising alarms over the dire financial state they say is affecting daily operations, with a critical demand for transparency in how funds are allocated.

According to the Association, the lack of adequate funding has led to shortages in essential resources, such as sanitation supplies, forcing prisoners and staff to carry water manually. Additionally, meal portions have been affected due to budget cuts, with the increased inmate population exacerbating the issue.

The Association has called on the Trinidad and Tobago Government to provide clarity on the allocation of funds, arguing that greater transparency could pave the way for improved conditions inside the facilities. Decision-makers are urged to act swiftly to find a solution to ensure the prison system can function effectively and humanely.

Concerns have also been raised about the management of finances intended for inmate welfare. Officials have pointed to profits from the prison commissary, suggesting these funds could be reinvested to alleviate some of the issues related to funding shortages.

Persisting with these financial challenges, the Association emphasized the need for meaningful intervention and accountability, echoing the sentiments of affected parties who demand that the quality and transparency of fund use be publicly scrutinized.
