Domestic violence continues to be a pressing issue in society, leading to the launch of a new initiative focused on raising awareness and promoting change. The upcoming performing arts public education production, “Sistas Calling TT,” is organized by therapist Dr. Roz Roach and is set to take place at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA) on October 25.

During the launch event held at NAPA on October 9, Dr. Roach shared her extensive background in researching domestic violence and providing support to survivors in Canada and Trinidad and Tobago since the 1980s. She underscored the importance of education in tackling domestic violence, stating, “The issue is changing lives, we need to change lives.”

Dr. Roach also addressed the stigma that victims often face, highlighting that many individuals are judged and rejected by authorities and family members when seeking help. She pointed out the risks associated with restraining orders and the scarcity of safe spaces for those trying to escape abusive situations, especially for those with children.

In addition to her work on the production, Dr. Roach is the founder of Dr. Roz’s Healing Place, a Canadian center that empowers women and children fleeing domestic violence. Since its inception in 1984, the center has assisted over 2,000 women.

The production is dedicated to Marcia Henville, a journalist who was tragically killed by her husband in 2015, serving as a poignant reminder of the realities of domestic violence.

Rashmi Ramsomair, an environmental, social, and governance lead at One Caribbean Media, provided statistics indicating that there were 1,937 reported cases of domestic violence in 2024, with 1,295 cases documented by September 27. She stressed the urgent need for awareness and support, asserting that “Sistas Calling” is not merely a campaign but a movement deeply rooted in the culture of Trinidad and Tobago.

For those interested in learning more about the initiative or attending the production, additional information can be obtained by contacting 383-7174 or emailing sistascalling@gmail.com. Tickets for the event are available for purchase at islandetickets.com.

The initiative aims to engage the community in discussions about domestic violence, encouraging individuals to reflect on their roles in preventing such incidents and supporting those affected. By utilizing the performing arts as a medium, “Sistas Calling TT” seeks to create a platform for dialogue and education, ultimately fostering a more informed and compassionate society.

As the date of the production approaches, organizers hope to draw attention to the critical issue of domestic violence and inspire action within the community. The event promises to be a significant step towards addressing the challenges faced by victims and promoting a culture of understanding and support.
