Trinidad and Tobago PM Reaffirms Commitment to Children’s Rights

Trinidad and Tobago recently observed World Children’s Day, focusing on the theme ‘My Day, My Rights.’ The event serves as a global reminder of the inherent dignity and rights of every child. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar reaffirmed her government’s commitment to protect and develop every child, referencing a quote from former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to highlight the nation’s duty. Since her administration returned to power in April 2025, steps to strengthen children’s rights and opportunities have been taken, such as prioritising universal digital access, providing free laptops, expanding school-safety frameworks, and boosting paediatric mental health services. The government also plans to unveil the Couva Children’s Hospital—a world-class facility dedicated to paediatric and adolescent care—in December. The Prime Minister views these measures as a testament to the government’s commitment to creating a safe environment where children can thrive. She encouraged the nation to listen to young people, as their input is valuable to national development.
