American treasure hunter Tommy Thompson has been at the center of one of the greatest shipwreck treasure mysteries in history. He spent over a decade in jail, refusing to disclose the whereabouts of hundreds of lost gold coins from the ill-fated S.S. Central America, famously known as the ‘Ship of Gold’. The ship sank in 1857 while transporting Gold Rush treasure, contributing to the Panic of 1857, a significant U.S financial crisis.
In 1988, Thompson’s team discovered the wreck and recovered an estimated US$50 million in gold and historical artefacts, a find that sparked international attention. However, the celebration was short-lived as investors claimed they hadn’t received their share of the proceeds, leading to years of lawsuits and legal battles.
The mystery deepened in 2012 when Thompson failed to appear for a court hearing and subsequently disappeared, only to be arrested three years later in Florida. Despite repeated court orders, Thompson refused to reveal the location of 500 rare gold coins recovered from the shipwreck, insisting they were transferred to a trust in Belize.
Thompson’s obstinacy led to his imprisonment for civil contempt between 2015 and 2026. His release in 2026 marked the end of an extraordinary chapter, but the mystery persists – the location of the missing coins remains unknown, continuing to captivate treasure hunters, legal experts, and the public alike.
