Matura Resident Alleges Police Extortion and Harassment
A resident of Matura has made serious allegations against members of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, claiming they were repeatedly targeted in an alleged extortion scheme involving demands for TT$80,000.
According to the resident, officers allegedly threatened continued harassment if the money was not paid. The individual said the experience has left them feeling trapped, claiming repeated attempts to report the matter through official channels resulted in no meaningful action.
The resident further alleged that police officers searched their home on multiple occasions without presenting proper warrants, describing the incidents as intrusive and a violation of their privacy. They also claimed that when they attempted to make formal complaints at local police stations, their concerns were dismissed or ignored.
The allegations have renewed concerns about police accountability and the mechanisms available for members of the public to report alleged misconduct. They also highlight the fear some citizens say they experience when attempting to seek redress against those entrusted with enforcing the law.
At this time, these remain allegations and have not been independently verified. There has been no official response from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service regarding the claims.
Anyone with information relating to alleged police misconduct is encouraged to report the matter to the appropriate oversight authorities, including the Police Complaints Authority or other relevant investigative bodies.
