Top U.S. Admiral Retires Amid Drug-Boat Operation Disputes

Admiral Alvin Holsey, leader of the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) since November 2024, has announced his early retirement, set for December 12, 2025. This marks an abrupt end to his tenure at SOUTHCOM, typically a three-year posting. His retirement comes amidst escalating U.S. military operations in the Caribbean, targeted at suspected drug-smuggling vessels. Some analysts suggest that Holsey’s early departure reflects internal conflict within the Pentagon over the legality and conduct of these operations. Holsey, who has served the U.S. Navy for nearly 37 years, has expressed pride in his service and confidence in SOUTHCOM’s future under his successor. His retirement, however, raises questions about the balance between operational urgency, legal norms, and command dissent in U.S military actions.
