Tobago Launches $500 Monthly Baby Grant to Combat Declining Birthrate

The Tobago House of Assembly has recently introduced a $500 monthly Baby Grant to help families on the island, responding to growing concerns over a declining birthrate. Officially launched on September 1, 2026, the initiative caters to parents and guardians of children born from January 1, 2026, with payments retroactive from the start of the year.

Through this programme, families will receive $500 each month for every eligible child until they turn five. Chief Secretary Farley Augustine emphasized that while the grant may not cover all expenses involved in raising a child, it is intended to assist with basic necessities or to be saved for the child’s future.

This new initiative complements Tobago’s existing baby box programme, which offers additional support to families with newborns. Applications for the Baby Grant can be submitted online through the newly established Tobago ID system, where applicants must provide personal and banking information.

The introduction of the Baby Grant comes amid broader concerns regarding declining birthrates, with national data showing a projected drop in Trinidad and Tobago’s birth rate from 8.8 births per 1,000 people in 2024 to 8.0 in 2025. The Tobago House of Assembly positions this grant not only as immediate financial relief for young families but also as a strategic investment in the island’s future generations.
