Tensions Surge as Mexico Questions U.S. Involvement in Drug Operation

Diplomatic tensions have escalated between Mexico and the United States following allegations of CIA involvement in an unauthorized anti-drug operation in northern Mexico. President Claudia Sheinbaum has indicated that her administration is contemplating sanctions against the state of Chihuahua, where claims suggest foreign agents dismantled drug laboratories without the necessary federal approval.

The situation has become more critical after a tragic crash over the weekend resulted in the deaths of two U.S. officials and two Mexican investigators. They were reportedly returning from the operation when the incident occurred, leading to conflicting narratives from both U.S. and Mexican authorities regarding the extent and legitimacy of American involvement in the operation.

Sheinbaum has firmly stated that any collaboration with foreign agencies must receive formal approval from Mexico’s federal government, emphasizing that U.S. agents are not permitted to operate independently within the country. While she acknowledged the participation of the Mexican military, she confirmed that federal officials had no prior knowledge of the involvement of U.S. personnel.

In response to the unfolding situation, Sheinbaum has requested a detailed explanation from the U.S. ambassador and plans to address the matter directly with Chihuahua Governor Maru Campos. This incident has reignited discussions surrounding national sovereignty, security cooperation, and the boundaries of foreign involvement in Mexico’s internal affairs.
