In a significant development in the ongoing battle against prison contraband smuggling, police officers thwarted an audacious attempt to use a drone for smuggling drugs, phones, and cigarettes into the Arouca Maximum Security Prison. The incident, which took place in the early hours of Saturday, October 4th, 2025, involved two suspects, one of whom is a 13-year-old boy. The officers on surveillance duty at Forde Street Extension, Bon Air, intercepted the suspects as they attempted to retrieve items from a nearby bushy area. Upon the officers’ approach, the suspects attempted to escape by running through dense bushes and jumping off a 25-foot embankment. However, their escape attempt was unsuccessful, and both were apprehended after a thorough search of the surrounding river area. The police recovered a DJI drone and controller, along with a substantial amount of contraband intended for the prison. The contraband included 1,050 grams of cannabis, 256 packs of Lucky Strike cigarettes, 15 Samsung cell phones, two LCD screens, 16 drone batteries, drug packaging materials, and various electronic accessories. The older suspect sustained injuries during the escape attempt and was taken for medical treatment. A simultaneous search of the Maximum Security Prison resulted in another significant seizure of contraband within the facility. This incident has sparked fresh concerns about the rising use of drones in organized smuggling operations, prompting authorities to intensify efforts to prevent illegal deliveries within prison facilities. The police investigation into the matter is ongoing.
