Supermarket Employee Arrested in $53,000 Western Union Theft

A supermarket employee in Point Fortin is currently in police custody following an investigation into the alleged theft of over $53,000 linked to Western Union transactions. The incident was reported to authorities on April 19, 2026, around 5:45 p.m., prompting a swift response from local law enforcement.

Officers, including PC Ramroop, PC Gopaul, and WPC Carter Thompson, arrived at the supermarket to investigate the allegations of suspected larceny. Upon reviewing CCTV footage, they discovered discrepancies involving cash handled at the Western Union counter.

The CCTV evidence reportedly showed Renee Joseph, the employee in question, receiving cash, inspecting it, and subsequently placing it into her handbag. This alarming footage raised concerns over the management of funds at the establishment.

Following the review, investigators determined that a total of $53,817 in Trinidad and Tobago currency was unaccounted for. Police approached Joseph on the premises, where she was informed of the allegations stemming from the CCTV findings.

Joseph was then cautioned and arrested on suspicion of larceny. She is currently being held at the Point Fortin Police Station as the investigation continues into this significant theft case.
