Stuart Young Calls for Respectful Police Engagement Amid Youth Protests in Trinidad

In a powerful message amidst growing national unrest, Former Prime Minister Stuart Young has called for a respectful and empathetic approach in addressing the concerns of the youth in Trinidad and Tobago. Amid recent protests and demonstrations, Young highlighted the need for greater understanding from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) and other authorities in their interactions with young citizens.

Young’s statement comes at a time of heightened tension, as many young people in the country express frustration and anger over unresolved societal concerns. He firmly defended their right to peaceful protest, urging that young people deserve to be heard rather than vilified. “Our young people are frustrated and angry, and they have every right to be,” Young emphasized, pointing to a lack of answers to their serious questions and legitimate grievances.

Criticizing attempts to portray protesters in a negative light, Young stressed the importance of transparency and accountability, core demands from the youth which align with the broader vision for a better nation. He urged the TTPS and other authorities to engage with the youth not only with care but also with a solution-oriented mindset. Young stated, “Let’s engage our young people and provide the guidance and answers they seek.”

Young concluded by encouraging the youth to remain hopeful and committed to working within the legal framework, advocating that they continue to demand the engagement they deserve. He called for a forward-looking dialogue infused with empathy and respect as a pathway to resolving the current challenges. His message resonates at a critical juncture for Trinidad and Tobago, underscoring the pivotal role of its young citizens in shaping the future.
