Store Bay Artist Dispute Resolved: New Booth for Mr. Thomas Amid Heritage Park Developments

The ongoing situation involving visual artist Mr. Collis Thomas and the Community Council at Store Bay Heritage Park has drawn significant public interest. Mr. Thomas, who has been working at the park for several years, found himself at the center of a dispute regarding his use of a shed intended for a community dirt oven project.

The shed falls under the jurisdiction of the Land Management Unit, which had granted the Canaan/Bon Accord/Crown Point Community Council permission for its use as part of a development initiative. Without authorization, Mr. Thomas established his studio in the shed, leading to a conflict when the council, after securing a Sustainable Tourism Grant, planned renovation works at the site. In May 2026, Mr. Thomas was served notices to vacate, which he declined.

Efforts were made by Secretary Zorisha Hackett to resolve the matter diplomatically. Though Mr. Thomas rejected an alternative booth location offered at Pigeon Point Road, further discussions led to a successful outcome. Mr. Thomas agreed to occupy one of the new booths planned for the Store Bay Beach Facility, ensuring he could continue his work without disrupting the council’s projects.

Assembly Member Niketa Percy expressed satisfaction with the resolution, which balances support for local artisans like Mr. Thomas with respect for public property and development processes. The community values its artisans’ contributions and remains committed to fostering environments where their crafts can prosper.
