In a stunning turn of events, soca artiste Kimba Sorzano has been acquitted of serious sexual offence allegations after a critical witness failed to appear in the Hall of Justice in Port of Spain. High Court Judge Gillian Scotland ruled that no evidence could be presented against Sorzano due to the absence of the complainant, leading the nine-member jury to return formal not guilty verdicts.
The trial, which began last week, was expected to hinge on the testimony of the alleged victim. However, repeated attempts by the prosecution to secure her attendance proved fruitless, effectively leaving them without the foundation needed for their case. Without the key witness, the prosecution was unable to proceed, resulting in the abrupt conclusion.
Sorzano faced serious charges, including attempted rape and grievous sexual assault stemming from an alleged incident that occurred in Point Fortin in early 2020. Following his arrest and charging in May of that year, he was granted bail set at $85,000. The case had previously been dismissed in October 2022 but was later revived by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, culminating in the recent trial.
Throughout the legal battle, Sorzano maintained his innocence, with his attorney Kelston Pope previously stating that his client intended to clear his name through the judicial process. The unexpected ruling marks a significant turn in what has been a highly publicized and contentious case.
