Sir Garfield ‘Garry’ Sobers, the Barbados-born cricketer widely regarded as the sport’s greatest all-rounder, died at his home in Barbados in July 2025 at the age of 89, just days before his 90th birthday. Sobers’ career spanned 93 Test matches for the West Indies between 1954 and 1974, during which he scored 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78 and took 235 wickets. In 1958, aged 23, he scored 365 not out against Pakistan, a world record that stood for 36 years. In 1968, playing for Nottinghamshire, he became the first batsman to hit six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket.
He captained the West Indies from 1965 to 1972 and was knighted in 1975. The ICC named its Men’s Cricketer of the Year award the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy in 2004. His death comes at a time when West Indies cricket faces structural decline, sparking conversations about how the region honours its sporting heritage.
