Samsung has launched its mobile payment service, Samsung Pay, in Australia, setting up a direct challenge to Apple Pay. The service, compatible with a range of Galaxy smartphones including the S6 and S7 series, aims to become the leading contactless payment system in the country.
Samsung Pay allows users to make payments at transport terminals, gyms, libraries, and retail stores, effectively replacing physical wallets. Australia becomes the fifth market for the service, following the US, China, South Korea, and Spain.
The move intensifies competition in Australia’s growing mobile payment sector, where Apple Pay has already established a presence. Samsung hopes its broader compatibility with existing payment terminals will give it an edge.
With contactless payments becoming increasingly popular, Samsung’s entry is expected to accelerate adoption among Australian consumers.
