First H5N1 bird flu case confirmed in New Zealand: vaccinations begin

New Zealand has reported its first case of the deadly H5N1 bird flu, detected in a migratory seabird on a beach near Wellington, Biosecurity Minister Andrew Hoggard confirmed on July 15. The infected brown skua seabird marks the arrival of a virus that has spread globally since 2021, killing millions of birds and infecting mammals and poultry.

Hoggard stated there is no evidence of large-scale wildlife deaths or spread among wild birds in New Zealand, and the virus has not been found in poultry. However, the country is on high alert, with heightened monitoring and testing underway.

In response, health officials have launched a vaccination program for 300 key breeding birds from five of the most endangered species, including the flightless takahe and kakapo. The vaccine, tested last year with no harmful side effects, offers uncertain protection as the birds have not yet been exposed to the virus.

Professor Brett Gartrell of Massey University expressed grave concern, warning that bird flu could push some of New Zealand’s unique native species to extinction. Many birds evolved without land mammals, leaving them highly vulnerable to introduced predators and diseases.

New Zealand has been preparing for H5N1’s arrival, working with the poultry industry on biosecurity plans. The case follows Australia’s first detection last month, the last continent to report the virus. Authorities urge vigilance but reassure the public that the risk remains low for now.
