Former Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley has delivered a scathing critique of the current administration, accusing it of hypocrisy and incompetence in dealing with the rising tide of crime in the country. Rowley noted that his previous attempts to categorize violent crime as a public health issue were met with ridicule from political opponents, who instead blamed his administration for the situation.
In his remarks, Rowley argued that the government had promised a clear plan to significantly reduce crime upon taking office, yet he now sees daily violent incidents being downplayed by those in power. He described the current approach to crime as a troubling blend of a ‘rolling state of emergency’ and public manipulation.
Rowley did not shy away from naming political figures such as David Nakhid and Anil Roberts, questioning their contributions to national development and holding them accountable for the prevailing circumstances. He went as far as calling some members of the administration ‘leeches,’ suggesting they prioritize political survival over the public’s welfare.
Furthermore, he emphasized the collective responsibility of both voters and non-voters in electing the current leadership, which he claims has fostered an environment rife with division and corruption. Rowley warned that unless this trend is addressed, it could lead to significant institutional damage and a decline in public trust.
“This augurs for a very messy situation,” he stated, expressing concern that waning hope and confidence would ultimately diminish the quality of life for citizens in the long run.
