Revitalisasi Museum Majapahit Dimulai, Fadli Zon Dorong Museum Agung di Trowulan Mojokerto

The revitalization of the Majapahit Museum in Trowulan Village, Mojokerto Regency, has officially commenced. Minister of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, Fadli Zon, led the groundbreaking ceremony for the project on Sunday, September 13, 2026.

The expansion project involves the development of 4.8 hectares of new land, which will be integrated with the existing 5.4-hectare site. Once completed, the museum complex will cover a total area of approximately 10 hectares.

Minister Fadli Zon stated that the project is necessary because the current facility, which houses approximately 88,000 artifacts, lacks the space to display the collection optimally. He proposed that the expanded facility be named the Great Majapahit Museum to better reflect the historical significance of the Majapahit Empire.

The museum design, selected through a competition, incorporates the philosophy of the Surya Majapahit. According to the Ministry of Culture, the construction will be environmentally friendly and will account for the preservation of the surrounding cultural heritage site, including any potential archaeological discoveries made during the building process. The new facility is intended to serve as more than a storage space, featuring digital facilities, performance areas, and interactive exhibits that incorporate archaeological findings from the site.

Fadli Zon added that the government plans to strengthen the historical narrative of Majapahit through the publication of history books, which may be adapted into films and performing arts. He expressed hope that the revitalization will increase both domestic and international tourism.

Mojokerto Regent Muhammad Al Barra welcomed the project, noting that Trowulan holds a vital position in preserving the legacy of the Majapahit civilization. He stated that the local government is prepared to collaborate with the central and provincial governments to ensure the site is preserved while supporting the development of tourism and the local economy.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by the Director General of Cultural Protection and Tradition, Restu Gunawan, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Culture, the East Java Provincial Government, the Mojokerto Regency Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda), local officials, and various cultural experts and historians.
