Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho is traveling to the United States this weekend to represent Cape Verde at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. The event, held from September 21 to 26, is themed “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that serves all.”
The Cape Verdean delegation includes the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Communities, Manuel Amante da Rosa; the Minister of Culture, Creative Industries, Youth and Sports, António Duarte; and the Minister of Family, Inclusion, Social Development and Labor, Adélsia Almeida.
Carvalho’s schedule includes participation in high-level meetings regarding the Pact for the Future in Africa, the protection of children’s rights in the context of artificial intelligence, climate action, and pandemic preparedness. On September 23, the Prime Minister is scheduled to speak at a meeting marking the 40th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development and participate in the launch of the OceanEye Alliance. On September 24, he will co-chair a high-level meeting on the existential threats posed by rising sea levels. He is set to address the General Assembly and hold a bilateral meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on September 26.
Following the UN assembly, the delegation will visit Massachusetts and Rhode Island from September 27 to 30 to engage with the Cape Verdean diaspora. Planned activities include meetings with the Governor of Massachusetts, the Governor of Rhode Island, a group of senators, and the Mayor of Boston. The delegation will also visit local businesses, the Lilla Frederick School, the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Memorial, and the Cape Verde Museum in Pawtucket.
The official mission to the United States is scheduled to conclude on October 1, with the delegation expected to return to Cape Verde on October 2.
