The General Inspection of Economic Activities (IGAE) in Cape Verde has reported its highest-ever rate of non-compliance within the retail sector. The enforcement actions were conducted in collaboration with the National Police, municipal police forces in Praia and São Vicente, and the General Labor Inspectorate in São Vicente.
The inspections targeted retail establishments, including minimarkets and grocery stores. During the operation, authorities seized various food products, including counterfeit spirits produced with refined sugar. Officials cited multiple violations, including expired products, improper storage, and pest infestations.
As a result of the inspections, 35 establishments were temporarily suspended due to poor hygiene conditions, including the presence of rats and cockroaches. These businesses were required to undergo cleaning and disinfestation processes, which took an average of two days before they were permitted to reopen.
According to the IGAE, the counterfeit spirits identified in the municipalities of São Lourenço dos Órgãos, São Domingos, and Ribeira Grande de Santiago have been linked to severe health issues and deaths among young people. The agency stated that these products contribute to significant levels of alcoholism on the islands of Santiago and Maio.
The IGAE and its partners have issued an appeal to economic operators to adhere to safety regulations and have requested public cooperation in reporting illicit practices that threaten public health and the national economy.
