Prime Minister Highlights Job Creation and Crime Reduction in First-Year Review

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has outlined significant achievements during her government’s first year in office, focusing on job creation and crime reduction. Speaking at the United National Congress’s report to the nation event in Couva, Persad-Bissessar highlighted a major employment drive that led to the creation of 15,000 jobs over the past year. She also pointed to a decrease in crime rates, particularly violent crimes, as evidence of effective governance.

During her speech, the Prime Minister emphasized her administration’s success in combating inefficient government programs, which were seen as breeding grounds for corruption. She noted that the closure of compromised systems had been necessary to redirect state resources more effectively. Reflecting the mantra of “better days are coming,” she assured citizens that efforts are being made to rectify long-standing issues created by previous administrations over a span of 10 years, while acknowledging the challenges still facing her government.

On the topic of housing development, Persad-Bissessar addressed concerns surrounding the recent directive to pause $3.4 billion in contracts with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC). She assured the public that none of these funds involve taxpayer money. Instead, she explained that the housing projects would be funded through public-private partnerships, with private entities financing the construction while the government provides the land. Once the homes are sold, profits will be shared between the government and the developers, she stated.

Concerning public safety, the Prime Minister reiterated that measures such as the declaration of states of emergency have proven effective in reducing crime. She cited the continued focus on coordination and accountability among law enforcement as critical to these achievements. Persad-Bissessar also hinted that these measures might continue as necessary to ensure the safety of Trinidad and Tobago’s citizens.

Despite the administration’s achievements, public opinion remains mixed. Citizens are split on the perceived progress, with some expressing optimism about the job market, while others still grapple with the economic and social challenges they face daily. The government urges patience, asserting that substantial change takes time, and reassures the public that its commitment to improving the nation’s welfare remains steadfast.
