Belize Volunteers Halt Historic Sarstoon Island Voyage After Guatemalan Blockade, Government Vows Diplomatic Response

Belize’s annual Belize Territorial Volunteers expedition around Sarstoon Island was abruptly halted after a flotilla of fourteen Guatemalan civilian and military vessels established a blockade on the Sarstoon River. The incident, the first of its kind in nearly two decades, forced the volunteers to abandon the historic circumnavigation.

The Belize Defence Force and Coast Guard accompanied the volunteers, but upon encountering the Guatemalan formation they withdrew to the Forward Operating Base to avoid a potentially dangerous clash. No injuries or material damage were reported, and both sides kept a safe distance while the blockade remained in place.

Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it will issue a new diplomatic note to Guatemala demanding respect for Belizean sovereignty. Foreign Affairs Minister Francis Fonseca reiterated the nation’s territorial integrity, stating, “We will not tolerate actions that threaten our borders or undermine the peace that has been hard‑won.”

The confrontation revives a long‑standing border dispute that dates back to the 19th‑century Treaty of 1859, which left the Sarstoon River’s exact course undefined. Analysts warn that the blockade could signal a shift toward more assertive Guatemalan posturing, raising concerns for regional stability and future maritime cooperation.
