Prime Minister Gaston Browne delivered an extensive address at the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) convention, where he underscored his government’s accomplishments and set forth a future vision for Antigua and Barbuda. The convention comes as the nation gears up for the upcoming general elections, framing the electoral contest as a decisive choice between the experience of his administration and opposition uncertainty.
Browne pointed to significant improvements under his leadership, particularly in tourism, healthcare, and infrastructure. He acknowledged the staunch efforts of the party stalwarts, attributing to them the foundational work necessary for what he termed a “renaissance” in various sectors. Key gains highlighted included enhancements in potable water quality, increased tourist arrivals, and significant road and housing development. The Prime Minister emphasized that while challenges persist, his administration remains committed to addressing them, especially in eliminating poverty pockets across the country.
Ahead of the April 30 elections, Browne urged voters to recognize the critical nature of their decision, framing it as a choice between proven leadership and inexperience. He stressed the importance of unity within the ABLP, describing it as vital for success and the continuity of progress. Echoing this sentiment, Browne stressed that the party’s renaissance would focus on youth and developing new leaders to ensure a seamless transition for future governance.
Addressing other key initiatives, the Prime Minister discussed plans to elevate the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority into a key port and logistics hub for the region. This development is driven by expected increases in cargo traffic from South America and Europe. Browne also assured the continuation of road improvement projects post-election, underscoring these were not election ploys but long-term infrastructure investments.
Furthermore, Browne affirmed that all outstanding retroactive payments to public servants from previous agreements would be fulfilled. With the nation keeping a close eye on political developments, both the ABLP and opposition parties are ramping up their electoral campaigns, leading to the nomination day activities set by the Antigua Barbuda Electoral Commission.
