Poland’s Constitutional Court has been at the centre of a sudden crisis after an announcement on the court’s official website stated that President Michał Swieczkowski and Vice President Krzysztof Sochanski had been removed from their positions. The notice, which was published on the court’s website, did not provide details on the reasons for the removals. Following the announcement, the court building was surrounded by police forces. Police officials reported that a number of demonstrators had breached the court’s perimeter fences and, according to them, some had thrown objects at police officers. In the aftermath, three individuals were detained by the police. The circumstances surrounding the removal of the court’s leadership and the subsequent police action remain unclear, and no further official statements have been released at this time.
