The People’s National Movement (PNM) vehemently denies allegations surrounding the financing of its Balisier House headquarters. The opposition party contends that it has received no official correspondence or court order regarding the proceedings and describes the allegations as politically motivated persecution. It maintains that the Balisier House and its land were acquired over 65 years ago, and the redevelopment project was funded through lawful fundraising initiatives.
The PNM accuses the United National Congress (UNC) Government of orchestrating a campaign of political victimisation through the investigation. It alleges that the current administration is using public resources to target political opponents, rather than addressing pressing national issues such as crime and unemployment. Despite these allegations, the PNM has assembled a legal team to challenge every aspect of the matter.
High Court Judge Margaret Mohammed recently granted the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) permission to proceed with a major investigation into the funding of the PNM’s Balisier House headquarters. The investigation focuses on both the refurbished historic Balisier House building and the unfinished multi-storey headquarters.
Investigators suspect that the party’s total wealth may exceed its lawfully acquired wealth. The police are relying on a report from international consultants Berkeley Research Group, which estimated the project cost at approximately $118.4 million. Investigators are questioning how a political party could finance such a large project through traditional fundraising alone. The investigation is also examining potential links between contributions made towards the Balisier House redevelopment and contracts awarded by State agencies.
Despite the ongoing investigation, the PNM remains confident that truth, justice, and democracy will prevail. It is committed to pursuing all legal remedies available and will continue to challenge any allegations made against it.
