The Prime Minister’s characterization of Trinidad and Tobago as a ‘lawless dump’ has been strongly condemned by the opposition. They argue that such language contradicts the love, unity, patriotism, and national pride she pledged in her May 1, 2025, swearing-in speech. The opposition questioned why she would seek to govern a country she publicly portrays as lawless and dysfunctional, asserting that such language could potentially damage the nation’s international reputation, investor confidence, and regional relationships. They also emphasized that leadership requires uplifting national identity, not degrading it. Historical comparisons were drawn with past Prime Ministers, who, according to them, displayed more respect for the country. The opposition expressed concern that this rhetoric could affect nationals working across the Caribbean and stated that their criticism is centered on accountability, respect for citizens, and leadership standards.
