PM to Make “Important Statement” in Parliament as SOE Extension and Key Reforms Take Centre Stage

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says she will deliver an important statement when the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago convenes today at 1:30 p.m.

In a post shared on her Facebook page, the Prime Minister urged citizens to tune in, stating that her administration remains focused on national progress while prioritising the safety and security of the population.

Persad-Bissessar said several significant matters are scheduled for debate in what she described as the “People’s Parliament,” including legislation aimed at modernising the country’s legal system and improving the efficiency of the judiciary.

Among the items listed on the agenda is the Law Revision (Amendment) Bill, which seeks to transition Trinidad and Tobago’s laws into an official digital format alongside traditional printed volumes. The initiative is expected to modernise the country’s legal framework while also reducing government expenditure associated with printing and maintaining large volumes of legal texts.

Parliament is also expected to debate the Civil Division Bill, 2026. The proposed legislation aims to establish a specialised Civil Division within the judiciary to help address longstanding case backlogs and improve the speed and efficiency with which civil matters are handled in the courts.

Additionally, Members of Parliament will debate the President’s statement as well as the government’s motion to extend the ongoing State of Emergency.

The State of Emergency was implemented as part of the government’s broader strategy to combat crime and strengthen national security.

The Prime Minister noted that her administration remains committed to advancing key reforms while ensuring that public safety continues to be treated as a top national priority.
