Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has downplayed concerns that Trinidad and Tobago was bypassed during a recent diplomatic tour by Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodriguez. Despite Rodriguez’s meetings with regional leaders in Barbados and Grenada, Persad-Bissessar expressed she has ‘no concerns’ about the omission. Her remarks come amidst speculation that these actions could signal a diplomatic rift.
Persad-Bissessar, addressing local media, emphasized that the bypass was not a snub but linked to ongoing sanctions restricting Rodriguez’s movements. Highlighting Trinidad and Tobago’s business interests, she pointed out the country’s equity stakes in the Dragon Gas field through the National Gas Company. This substantial investment underlines existing ties between the two nations, despite current diplomatic strains.
The Prime Minister assured that a diplomatic visit to Venezuela is planned although no specifics on the timeline or delegation details were provided. The diplomatic ties are particularly significant given the strategic importance of the Dragon Gas field, an asset crucial to both nations’ energy sectors.
In contrast, Opposition Senator Dr. Amery Browne criticized Persad-Bissessar’s response as “unrealistic”, suggesting that her stance reflected underlying tension between the nations. Browne accused Persad-Bissessar of exhibiting ‘undiplomatic belligerence’, claiming this has contributed to the perceived diplomatic freeze.
Meanwhile, geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve as Trinidad and Tobago navigates its role within Caricom. The Caribbean Community has recently reiterated its support for Guyana amid territorial disputes with Venezuela, urging member states to avoid actions that might legitimize Venezuela’s claims over the Essequibo region. This broader regional context adds layers of complexity to Trinidad’s diplomatic engagements.
As Trinidad and Tobago considers sending a delegation to Venezuela, the Prime Minister’s statements reflect an intent to maintain a pragmatic approach in handling diplomatic relations while balancing regional alliances. The situation remains fluid, with implications for both diplomatic relations and energy partnerships in the region.
